"Never Again," Richard La Plante promised after he and his new wife completed building their family home in East Hampton, New York. But he did not keep his promise. Instead, he bought twenty acres of raw land on a mountaintop located three and half thousand miles away, in a small town that he had only visited by internet... And the nightmare began. A house in New York to sell, a massive loan to pay off for the newly purchased land, dishonest builders, some of the most stringent building codes in America, and the economic collapse of 2008. With no general contractor, because they had decided to save money by doing it themselves, La Plante and his wife face an empty bank account, a black widow spider infestation and a large wooden frame with no windows. With two young sons to raise, a stony silence between them and a marriage counselor who says in sagely fashion, "There's only one answer. Finish the house," the La Plantes stumble from disaster to disaster. Never Again is a seven year chronicle of trial and triumph, both a warning and inspiration to anyone trying to build a dream.

Never Again Building the Dream House Richard La Plante 9781908191304 Books

I read this book with great interest since I am also in the process of building my dream house. Although it is only a fraction of the cost the author accrued, it describes some of the very same issues I am dealing with. The stress and anxiety are real and are described with humor but also created a serious sense of dread for me as I continued to read.
Unlike the author I am doing much of the work myself which adds a whole different dimension to the situation.
I love his descriptions and dealings with the subs which is totally accurate and just as ridiculous as what you would expect in the world of construction.
To sum it up this book was comforting and terrifying all at the same time. As absurd as it sounds It was almost a relief to see that someone had a much worse experience than I am having.......so far.
I know one thing for sure. I will never do this again either!

Never Again Building the Dream House Richard La Plante 9781908191304 Books Reviews

I read the book quickly, I could not put it down. I laughed, cried, got angry, and then laughed some more. This is not the type of story I would normally pick up but Richard La Plante is a great writer and made the subject come alive with his descriptions, everything from his working crew to his personal life. I will suggest this book to my friends. And I will definitely pick up some of his other non-fiction stories. If he could write a book about building his dream house this great I am betting that one of his non-fiction books will also be a great read.
This extremely witty account of the pitfalls of building a dream house from scratch in the Ventura County area of Southern California is fascinating on so many levels - including Mr LaPlante's forays into the realm of on-screen showbiz, moving from the idyll of rural Long Island, and the various battles with county planners, assessors, would-be movie producers and the journey he has taken from his childhood home in suburban Philadelphia via London and parts East to get there. His reading of his own book is finely judged with a very nice level of self-deprecation and amusement at his own short-comings.
Having read most of Richard LaPlante's previous books (all the Tanaka/Fogarty detective/thriller series - Mantis, Steroid Blues, Mindkill and Leopard - and his wonderful bike journey books - Hog Fever and Detours) it is a joy to be reminded of his fascinating journey through life in this, his latest outing as both author and narrator.
Highly recommended!!!
Really enjoyed this book, and got me hooked on the author's style! Get it, read it, and you will enjoy it!
Love it
This was not my favorite book of Richard La Plante, just because the reader has to empathetically experience all the frustrations endured by the author and his wife. Nevertheless, it was a very good read. I always have trouble putting down a La Plante book.
I found this book while we were house hunting. For us house hunting was so much more difficult than we expected. I read this book through our own ordeal and was thankful we were not going through nearly as much as this writer went through.

I have lived in the Ventura / Ojai area for many years, so it was easy for me to relate to. I enjoyed the writer's different viewpoint of familiar territory.

The book is laced with humor - which is absolutely necessary to turn the writer's ordeal into anything anyone would want to listen to. I'm glad their family finally made it through.

I do recommend this for anyone buying or building a house or anyone interested in other's adventures in real estate.
